FAMILIES AND SUPPORTERS OF CHURCH 1990
Descendants of some of the original settlers still live in Rougemont and the
English community, while its numbers are diminishing, has maintained a social identity
through the organization of St.Thomas' Anglacan Church.

A remark was made by one of the former clergy, Rev. Abbott, concerning the membership of
the congregation. He noted that the men, without exception were " Church of England
men", but for some reason or other married wives of another religious denomination.
His congregation between 1901 and 1904, consisted chiefly of Congregationalists so far as
the women were concerned.

The fact that there were only two churches in Rougemont, the Anglican and the Roman
Catholic, probably contributed to this situation. In December 1967, a letter from the
Bishop was read concerning the giving of Communion"
" It has long been the policy of the diocese that where we are the only non Roman
Catholic church in the community, we make welcome members of the other communions at the
altar rails, without imposing any obligation to become Anglican".
Rev. Abbott also remarked in his history that Rougemont was remarkable for people who
attained in not a few cases to extreme age, as can be seen from the tombstone records in
their Churchyard some near and others over ninety years".

The ' English' families living in Rougemont in 1990 represent many of the characteristiscs
noted by Rev. Abbott, in 1901.This harmony of religious denominations inside one church
may account for the feeling of warmth and welcome that many visitors have expressed on
attending services at St.Thomas'.
